internships and volunteering

Internships

GRACE is staffed largely by volunteer interns. Interns come primarily from the US, Australia, the UK and the Netherlands, but have also come from other parts of Europe as well as Canada, and all have played an essential part in the many GRACE successes.

2014 interns at the office

Intern tasks include detailed subject research, document collection, legal research and writing and witness interviews. GRACE provides high quality in-house training.  Interns are expected to be willing to pitch in with a wide range of tasks, from photocopying and answering the phone to helping prepare US Supreme Court briefs. Enthusiasm and an excellent work ethic are invaluable at GRACE and the amount of energy that you put into your internship will dictate what you get out of it.

Interns Alice, Nick, Aria and Tom.

Despite busy workloads previous interns have managed to find time to enjoy Houston’s eclectic social scene and form bonds with one another that have lasted well past their time at GRACE, and in more than one case have even led to marriage!

There is no better way to gain insight into the internship experience, than directly from those who have experienced it themselves.  Whether you are considering an internship, have applied and are preparing to begin, or throughout your internship, contact former interns for advice, help or a brief introduction to GRACE and to Houston.

If you are interested in interning at GRACE please contact Danalynn Recer. Please include an application, a resume, a cover letter, and, if applying for an internship, please provide enrollment verification or a transcript (an unofficial version will be accepted).

Reprieve

Many of our interns come to us through Reprieve UK, Reprieve Australia, or Reprieve US. These volunteer programs allow interns from around the world to donate three months or more of their time as volunteers in criminal defense offices representing poor people facing the death penalty in the US. To find out more or apply please consult Reprieve UK, Reprieve US or Reprieve Australia.

Jesuit Volunteer Corps

GRACE has hosted a Jesuit Volunteer, or JVC, every year for the past seven years.  JVCs live in community with other JVCs and in solidarity with the poor, donating a year or more of their lives to social justice work. Click here to find out more about the JVC.

Other Applicants

GRACE takes applications directly from U.S.-national applicants who are looking for a full-time placement over the summer or part-time or full-time positions at other times in the year. I

If you are interested in interning at GRACE please contact staff. Please include an application, a resume, a cover letter, and, if applying for an internship, please provide enrollment verification or a transcript (an unofficial version will be accepted).

Volunteering

Help GRACE by contributing your skills.  Whether you are a plumber, electrician, computer whizz or gardener we are always looking for willing hands to help out.  Please contact Danalynn Recer if you want to be part of GRACE.
